NOMENCLATURE
FINGERS and HANDS
1 = Thumb, 2 = Index, 3 = Middle, 4 = Ring, 5 = Little, H=Hand
345 = Middle, ring, and little fingers acting as a single finger.
L before finger designation = left; (i.e., L1 = left thumb)
R before finger designation = right; (i.e., R1 = right thumb)
STRING and LOOP NAMES
n after finger designation = near
f after finger designation = far
TV = transverse
Palmar - a string that crosses the palm.
Dorsal - a string that crosses the back of a finger or hand.
Distal - the loop or string nearest the
fingertip, regardless of the fingers orientation.
Proximal - the loop or string nearest the base of the finger,
regardless of the fingers orientation.
ACTIONS
When there is no L or R designation before before a finger
number, the action is performed simultaneously on both hands unless otherwise stated.
Pick up - retrieve a string using the nail side of a finger.
Hook up - retrieve a string using the fingerprint side of a
finger, then straighten the finger by rotating it a half turn towards you or away from you
as indicated.
Hook down - retrieve a string using the fingerprint side of a
finger, securing it in the crook of a bent finger. Oftentimes the finger remains in this
position with the fingertip touching the palm.
Transfer - Move a loop from one finger to another. Proximally
transfer 5 loop to 2 means "on each hand, insert index finger into the loop on
the little finger, entering it from the knuckle side, then withdraw the little
finger."
Exchange - Swap the loops encircling the same finger of each hand
so that one loop passes through the other. Exchange 2 loops, inserting fingers
distally, passing R loop through L loop means "transfer right index loop
to left index, inserting left index from the fingertip side; insert right index into the
proximal left index loop (i.e., the loop nearest the base of the finger), entering the
loop from the fingertip side, then lift it over the distal left index loop and off the
finger to complete the exchange."
Release - Allow the loop to slip off the finger.
Extend - Absorb the slack by separating the hands.
DEFINED
MOVEMENTS Opening A - Position 1. R2 picks up L palmar string; pass L2 distally through R2 loop and pick up R palmar string. Extend (fig. A).
Opening B - Position 1. R2 hooks up L palmar string; rotate R2 away from the body and up. L2 picks up L5n. Release 5 loop. |
|
| Opening C - Place string around 1 and 2 only (like Position 1,
but far string around 2 instead of 5). Pass 5 towards you under 2f and pick up 1n; return
to position under 2f with 1n on the back of 5, then with 5 hook down 2f and close 5 to the
palm (fig. C).

|
| Navajo - With the help of the opposite hand, lift the proximal loop(s) over the distal loop and release it. | |
Index Twist - At the beginning of this movement there will be (at least) one 2 loop and usually two 1 loops. Proceed as follows: Insert 3 towards you (proximally) through 2 loops, then catch proximal 1n (which will be TV) between the 2 and 3 fingertips and pull it back through the 2 loop (fig. D), placing the former proximal 1n around 2 by rotating the fingers away from you. You will then either Navajo this string off the thumbs, or drop the thumb loops completely, as specified in the instructions for the figure in question. On rare occasions you pick up a string other than proximal 1n; this will also be specified in the instructions. |
|
R Katilluik - Proximally insert R1 into L1 loop (fig. E); withdraw L1 from its loop and insert it proximally into both R1 loops (fig. F); proximally insert 1 into 2 loop picking up 2n (fig. G), lift double proximal 1 loop over the distal 1 loop and release it (fig. H, step A ); end by releasing 2 loop (fig. H, step B) ![]() Fig. E Fig. F Fig. G
L Katilluik - Same as R Katilluik but initiated by L1, (i.e., switch R1 and L1 in the above description). Inuit Ending - Proximally insert 1 into 2 loops (fig. I), Navajo 1 loops (fig. J, step A) and release 2 loops (fig. J, step B). You may or may not be told to then transfer the 1 loops to 2 for a better extension. |
